What brand of computer do you recommend?

Desktop: I would suggest either IBM or Dell. Although I have had excellent experiences with both companies, IBM is the better product and offers the best support. However, IBM is considerably more expensive than Dell. I can't tell you if it's worth the money but, if it were myself, I would go with Dell unless you really don't mind the price difference.

Laptop: Compaq is the way to go. For those techs out there, I know that statement probably doesn't sit well with you but that is what all the reviews have been saying for quiet some time. Also, I have worked on a couple new compaq laptops and have been pleasantly surprised each time. The closest contenders are IBM and Dell (in no particular order).

Server: For a low to mid range ($1,000-$15,000) level server I would suggest going with a Dell. I have worked with a couple and different stages of life and have been nothing but pleased. For the upper range I would go with IBM or Compaq, preferably in that order.

Should I buy low or high density RAM?

Depends on the system it is being put into. If you're buying a 256MB DIMM of high density (expect high density unless the vendor tells you otherwise) the worst case will probably be that the computer will only recognize it as 128MB.

Losing 128MB of your RAM may seem like a horrible thing but it really isn't. The price difference between a 128MB DIMM and a 256MB DIMM is negligible and when you replace your old computer, which should be soon if it doesn't recognize a 256MB DIMM :), you can take your stick of RAM and place it inside your new computer.

But, just to be on the safe side, always check a companies return policy. Or, if you really don't want to worry, take your computer to someone such as myself or to a computer store.
